Carla and Sadie moving to Canada

After nearly three years as resident guests with Amigos de los Animales, Carla and Sadie are finally headed to forever homes.
This week they are being crate trained for the flight to Canada where they will meet their experienced foster dog parents.  Although initially in foster home settings it is highly likely that both will stay permanently.  Sadie is going to Vancouver while Carla will reside in Port Coquitlam.

Both will have nearly round-the-clock professional human companionship as they adjust to living "on the outside", learning to walk properly on a leash and the art of being housebroken.  It is also important to note that both will have frequent access to doggie day care centers for fun and socialization.

There are simply no adequate words to describe both the joy of seeing Carla and Sadie head home and the appreciation for those that are receiving them.

A very special acknowledgement goes to Holly Norris (bigandsmallrescue.com) who has coordinated this effort with ADLA and Lynn Draper who will take over the management of the girls adoption once they arrive in Canada and who will accompany the girls during their flight to Canada.  Both Holly and Lynn will work together to ensure a successful adoption for both.

Let's not forget either, the many volunteers and staff at ADLA over the last three years who never gave up hope that one day Carla and Sadie would find homes.  A job very well done!

When Carla and Sadie leave ADLA on May 1st. tears of joy will be flowing for sure.

Remember Carmela?

If you don't remember who this little darling is....she found a home in Canada not long ago.  We just received a note from her new mom - we wanted to share with you....

Hi there,

All is going well with Carmela, she is such a sweety, we are really enjoying her.
Carmela is very happy in her new home & my friends love her.

My son built a gate so we could leave her in the laundry room when we go out, well, we came home last night to her on the other side of the 4 foot gate looking back at us. She had scaled it and made herself comfortable in the living room. She has had no accidents since the first day so guess we can now leave her out when we go out .she is such a comedian. She has learned to sit before she gets her supper and get down and we are working on stay, she does it for a bit but not long. She is very smart . We have learned to ignore other dogs and not to bark when we see them so we walk everywhere which is great. We walk once in awhile with a Wheaton terrier which weights 50 lbs, a pretty big dog and they get along very well.
All in all we are very happy with her. Thanks for finding her for us.

Best wishes Sandra, Carmela's mom

In case you were wondering....

So you have decided to adopt a dog or cat from us . . . now what?
Visit the shelter and discover which animal seems to suit your desires.  If you have made a decision you will be required to fill out a questionnaire and answer a few simple questions regarding your home and how the animal will fit it.  Once you have been "approved" for adoption we will ensure that your new family member is vaccinated and neutered.  (most are ready to go immediately).

When our Vet deems that the animal is ready to go you will be asked to make a donation - generally $400 for dogs and $200 for cats.

Remember that when you adopt an animal you are making a commitment to that animal to care for and love it for the remainder of his/her life.  The rewards are great!

Smitty and Carmela- new Canadians

Remember Smitty?  covered in motor oil and rescued by John and Sharon, regular supporters of ADLA?

Well, Smitty has officially left Mexico today, Wed. April 1st for his new forever home in British Columbia - We wish Smitty all the best and hope that he sends some "selfies" of himself and his new family.

NOT ONE but two lucky ADLA guests left for British Columbia today.  Carmela, another Terrier mix is winging her way on the same flight to another Canadian family.  Godspeed Carmela!

A special note of thanks belongs to Cynthia (You know who you are) who visits and volunteers at the shelter for a few days every  year and is now responsible for finding homes for 5 of our guests over the past few years.  It is folks like John, Sharon, Cynthia and MANY others that make our endeavour worthwhile.  Thanks to each of you.
