More Dogs for Adoption

Below are some more beautiful furry friends just waiting for you to take them home...

Patsy, she is blind and would need a special home. She is very sweet and loving. She does need to get acquainted with new people slowly since she can not see.

Milsha, young female, black lab mix. A lot of energy and likes everyone.

Bingo, about 1 year old, male, smaller in size. Likes people but not sure of all other dogs. Very happy boy.

Cookie, about 1 year old, she is a small female. Very shy.  She was in a home that did not treat her with love.  So, she needs love and attention to show her not everyone is bad. Loves her walks. And loves to cuddle.

Chiquis,  is a small dog. This girl is very very sweet, and loves hugs. She would want a bed indoors to be close to her family.

Ban Dam,  He is a younger Pit Bull mix. This guy is very friendly and likes everyone. Because he is so strong, he needs training and probably no young children. Doesn't like all dogs, so one dog family for him.

Duguesa, is a younger, smaller girl. Very friendly, gentle and loves everyone.

Tabatta, is a very sweet girl. about 4 years old. She has a limp due to a past injury on her leg but it doesn't stop her. She likes quiet places and her inside bed. Loves to roll in the sun and have her belly rubbed. She doesn't like all dogs. Her perfect home would be with an older couple, no other dogs and Lots of Love!!

These are just a few of the wonderful dogs waiting at our shelter for their Forever Home. Please stop by the shelter for a doggie hug and lick....you might become addicted!!

Injured German Shepard

WE HAVE A WONDERFUL UPDATE ON 'JUMBO' - Do you all remember his story?  (I have posted it below to refresh your memory)

Jumbo has been reunited with his original owner after 4 months of Veterinary care and rehabilitation after being hit by a car. We also neutered him - He was soooo happy to jump into his truck and go back home to his sweet family.

This beautiful male German Shepard was left at the shelter on April 24.  It had been struck by a car and in bad need of stitches.  Billie cleaned the wounds as best she could and then had Geraldo come in and do some stitching.  He is limping pretty badly and may have a fracture, we are not sure until we get X-rays.

Medico Oscar looked at him on April 26 and felt confident that the work that Billie and Gerardo had done will be successful.

As of this morning our boy had chewed off his stitches but was not bleeding.  He will not relieve himself in his immediate surroundings (X-Pen) so he needs to be walked despite the limp.

Let's hope for a full recovery, a return to his owner or a new forever home!
Updates to follow.

Meet Founder

Founder:  Abandoned in the parking lot of ADLA tied to a light pole and forced to sit on top of a pile of concrete and brick rubble.  When she was discovered by staff she was thirsty and exhausted, unable to get out of the early morning hot sun.
Founder has already captured the hearts of several volunteers and should have no trouble finding a new forever home.  She is extremely friendly, walks well on a leash and simply wants some love and affection.  She could spend all day watching the kittens.
Hats off to Rocky (lead Cage Attendant) for quickly setting up suitable quarters for Founder and removing the load of ticks that she brought, unwittingly, with her to the shelter.

Some new goodies in the Bazaar:

The bathroom sink is sold separately from the wall mount fixtures shown in the photo.  The sink is $150, the collection of wall mount fixtures is also $150 and match the sink.

Ongoing Health and Wellness...

"Tis the season!" - for fleas and ticks.  Here President Gerardo and Medico Oscar "dip" Sister Act  I in a solution designed to eradicate fleas and ticks.  The entire adult dog population at the Shelter is being treated to maintain the highest standards of health possible during these difficult summer months of high infestation.  This procedure will be repeated once every three days during a 9 day period.

Sasha - our newest resident...

This "Sasha", a 4 - 6 month old mixed breed puppy.  She was brought in by a friend of ADLA that found her cowering under a car, and had a long rope tied to her neck.  As you can see, she is severely dehydrated, malnourished , anemic from the massive tick infestation, and has an infection in her eyes.

We have since given her an antibiotic regimen to help with tick-bourne disease, nutritional therapy to help her gain weight and heal, fluid therapy to assist with dehydration, and she is on ophthalmic medications to help with her eye infection.

Updates to come!!!

 Yes, folks, THOSE are ticks!

Update on Cinderella and Brad - our Special Needs dog

Following two chemo treatments Cinderella suffered  a series of minor setbacks due to her weakened immune system including an infected paw and a bout with hook worms and anemia. But the little gal is a fighter and is once again her energetic self following a series of medical treatments. She is now ready for her third and final chemo treatment. Enough cannot be said on behalf of our Vet, Oscar! Thanks also to Billie, Gerardo and Jill - all who have worked very diligently to see Cinderella through this difficult time.

As the picture shows, her cancer growth is nearly gone and further surgery does not appear to be needed. She is almost whole again and will probably find permanent residence with one of our volunteers when she is fully recovered.

We will keep you updated on this remarkable journey.

BRAD...
Brad is a special needs boy with a minor brain injury from being hit by a car. His front leg moves involuntarily so walking or running can be difficult for him. Nonetheless, Brad is a very friendly dog waiting for the special  someone to take him home forever.

The 20 Most Important Facts Dog Lovers Must Never Forget

Dogs are so loyal that they love us no matter what we do.

But if we want to provide the best life possible to these wonderful animals, we have to remember they have complex thoughts and feelings, too.

Here are 20 that we must never forget.

Don't be upset when I jump for joy when you come through the door.

I only live for ten or fifteen years. You are what makes that time enjoyable. It's hard on me when you go away.

Give me time to understand what you want from me.

I don't always get it right on the first try, but I promise I'm trying as hard as I can.

Give me your trust.

Don't be angry with me for too long. And please don't lock me up to punish me.

You have your friends and family to keep you happy and entertained. I just have you.

Take me inside when the weather gets bad.

The backyard doesn't have air conditioning or a heater. You don't have to let me on the couch, but a small part of the kitchen is much better than sleeping in the snow.

Talk to me.

Sure, we don't speak the same language, but the sound of your voice brightens my whole day.

Comfort me when I'm scared.

You know a lot more about loud noises, strange people, and new places than I do.
I need to know that you'll protect me from them. I always feel safer when I'm with you.

Remember that I'll never forget how you treat me.

Teach me that humans are made of love, not pain. And don't ever let me forget it.

Come outside with me.

The sights, sounds, and scents of nature are some of my greatest pleasures in life.
I don't care if we play, go for a walk, or just sit under a tree together . . . I want you to experience them with me.

Let me make new friends.

Introduce me to other dogs, cats, or even bigger animals. We might not get along in the end,
But having some more friends that look and smell like me makes my life that much brighter.

Give me a treat every once in a while.

Food is one of my greatest pleasures in life. I know you want me to be healthy,

So I understand when you don't share your own meals with me.
But giving me a dog biscuit when I've been good or mixing tasty vegetables
Mixed in with my dinner is guaranteed to make me wag my tail extra hard.

Please don't hit me.

I have teeth that can crush bone. Instead, I cover you in sloppy, wet kisses.
Just as I choose not to hurt you, please make the choice to not hurt me.

Understand when I need my alone time.

I love you more than anything, but even though it's rare, I don't always want to play or cuddle.

Don't be sad if I'd rather sleep on the cold tile floor instead of in your bed on hot summer nights,
And be understanding if I don't want to play as much as the years go on.

Show me your world.

The house and yard might be the only places I ever see unless you let me come with you.

A trip to the pet store, the park, or even just a ride in the car is exhilarating for me.
I can't wait to see what you want to show me.

Teach me new things

Learning new tricks keeps my mind active, but most of all, it gives me a way to impress you.
I love showing off for your friends, looking up at you, and seeing how proud of me you are.

Let me get dirty once in a while.

Your world is inside, but I thrive outdoors.
Sometimes I find a lot of mud or a lake that smells like all of its fishy inhabitants.
I understand if you don't want to wash all that stuff off every day,
But as long as it's safe, let me go back to my wild roots every now and then.

Touch me.

Nothing makes me feel more loved than when you take time out of your day
To rub my ears or scratch that itchy spot on my back that I can't reach.
I can't understand your words, but I definitely understand the feelings behind a hug.

Pay attention if I don't seem like myself.

It might seem like I'm just being lazy or stubborn, but I might not be feeling well.
I can't get help for myself, and I need you to look out for me.

Love me when I'm old just as much as you did when I was young.

I might not be the cute puppy that I once was,
but I still love you just as much now as I did then.
Please take care of me when my body doesn't work like it used to.

Come with me on my final journey.

I know it will be difficult, but I need you by my side when the time comes for me to leave this world.
Every moment down to my last breath is easier if I have you with me.

With deep affection, love, and respect,
Your Forever Friend
